When classical aortic valve replacement surgery cannot be performed due to the patient's age and concomitant pathology and becomes too life-threatening, a TAVI procedure is performed.

What is TAVI?

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is a minimally invasive surgery that allows the aortic valve to be replaced without incisions in the chest. All manipulations are performed through a catheter inserted into a blood vessel, making the procedure less traumatic and safer, especially for elderly patients and those contraindicated to open surgery.

How does the procedure work?

TAVI is accomplished through accesses:

  • Femoral artery (in the leg).
  • Apex of the heart (performed jointly by cardiac surgeons and interventional cardiologists)
